Buying A Rabbit

When buying a rabbit, Elms Pets recommends that they be purchased from a private, reputable breeder. It is always worth considering rabbit rescue centres, which have a variety of rabbits available.

If you do purchase a rabbit from a pet shop, it is important to know that although there are some reputable breeders, many of these shops buy them from a mass-producing breeding farm, where the breeders aim for quantity, rather than quality. No information about these rabbits is usually available and they have rarely been handled, meaning they may be unpredictable in terms of behaviour and health.

It is important for the pet shop to be able determine the sex of rabbits to ensure if buying more than one, they are same sex and to avoid buying a pregnant rabbit.
