Types Of Housing

When you have decided which herptile you would like to have as a pet. There are many different types of houses for these animals including cages, aquatic terrariums, woodland terrariums and desert terrariums. Keep reading to find out all you need to know about these houses:

Cages

There are many different types of cages available for your pet. The cages must be escape proof, draft proof, moisture resistant, heat resistant and well–lit. Pets that take special cage considerations are: green iguanas, chameleons, various turtles and various snakes.

Aquatic Terrariums

This is like an aquarium. This needs to be filled with 4-6 inches of water and have a submersible heater. There needs to be some form of gravel on the base of the tank. There needs to be a suitable, vented lid to stop your pet from escaping. To set up an aquatic terrarium, you will need: a vented lid, a basking area such as bark and a background. Animals suited for this type of environment are turtles, frogs, newts, rubber eels, water snakes, and salamanders.

Woodland Terrarium

Woodland Terrariums is like an aquatic terrarium; however there is no large amount of water, just a small water bowl. It is filled with moss, bark, soil, driftwood and rocks to name but a few. Various greenhouse plants can work well in these conditions also. These houses are ideally suited for various frogs, salamanders, geckos and some varieties of snake.

Dessert Terrarium

For this type of housing, you will need to create an arid, dry environment. You will need some form of reptile bark substitute, terrarium or carpet, drought-tolerant plants such as cacti. You will need a heat source and thermometer to ensure the correct temperature is constant. The types of animals suited to this environment are various lizards and geckos.
