Caring For Gerbils

There are many different varieties of cage, ranging from square to having a variety of rooms and tubes leading to each. The typical ‘plastic’ cages of hamsters are sometimes unsuitable for gerbils as they have the ability to gnaw through the plastic. When buying bedding for the cage, Elms Pets recommends avoiding fluffy bedding, as these are dangerous to gerbils. Gerbil food can be purchased from pet shops. This food includes seeds, nuts and small traces of fruit and vegetables.

Gerbils are typically non-aggressive, small, easy to handle, sociable and have specially adapted kidneys ensuring they produce a minimum of waste to conserve body fluids, which makes them very clean with little odor. All of these points mean that Elms Pets thinks gerbils make fantastic small pets.
